Old Proiettificio Ansaldo- Costa Container Lines Offices

Sampierdarena, Fiumara complex (Genoa)

The project involved the renovation and restyling of part of the interior of the building known as Fiumarone, built as a warehouse in the 19th century and then used as a projectiles factory by Ansaldo, and their redevelopment into offices for Costa Container Lines. The entire original structure was restored by architect De Mari to preserve the industrial memory of the place and now houses various production and management activities.

To create the Costa Container Lines headquarters, covering 7000 square metres, the project retained the load-bearing structure of cast iron columns with shaped capitals and wooden beams and floors, and created a full-height space to provide natural lighting for the central spaces. The eight-metre-wide cavity is enclosed by a glazed roof and large window frames supported by a metal structure. The elements that cover the ceilings and highlight the sequence of floors are made of bolted steel bands to echo the image of the original structure.
